What do I need to register a new, previously unregistered vehicle purchased from a Dealer?

  • Manufacturer's statement of origin  or certificate of title assigned from dealer to purchaser.

  • Original itemized bill of sale from dealer to purchaser, showing complete description(make, year, model and vehicle identification number) of the vehicle sold, vehicle traded-in (if any).

  • Properly completed and signed odometer and damage disclosure.

  • Valid state issued photo identification. (Driver's license or identification card.

What do I need to register a vehicle with an out-of-state title?

  • Certificate of title.

  • Current mileage.

  • Properly completed and signed odometer and damage disclosure.

  • Valid state issued photo identification.

I lost my title! Can I get another one?

  • A duplicate title can be issued when the original has been mutilated, lost, destroyed, or never received. Only the registered owner, the registered owner's agent, or lien holder can apply for a duplicate title. Proof of lien satisfaction must be provided if applicable. 

  • NC has a mandatory 15-day hold period for all duplicate titles.

What do I need to register a vehicle purchased from a private seller? (NC Title)

  • Certificate of Title with proper re-assignment from seller to buyer.(If Notary is located on back, Seller must sign in front of a Notary)

  • Properly completed and signed odometer and damage disclosure.

  • Valid state issued photo identification. 

  • Safety Inspections within 90 days.

What do I need to register a vehicle I'm still making payments on?

  • Current vehicle registration.

  • Current mileage.

  • Lienholder information.

  • Valid state issued photo identification.

What do I need to sell my car?

  • To ensure that the vehicle is completely transferred out of your name, the Certificate of Title must be assigned to the new buyer in front of a notary. 

  • Before you cancel your insurance, you must cancel your license plate; other wise you will be fined for having an "active" license plate without insurance.
